At QuickBooks Connect Toronto, one thing quickly became clear: accounting professionals love<\/em> tips for utilizing their accounting software. Not only was every seat filled at a Monday morning session on QuickBooks Online Accountant, but there was a lineup out the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The popular session was led by Dawne Leaney Davidson<\/a> and Tiffany Stewart<\/a>. As co-administrators of the thriving QuickBooks Headquarters<\/a> Facebook community, Davidson and Stewart love supporting ProAdvisors, accountants, and bookkeepers using QuickBooks. Their goal that day was to share some lesser-known features of QuickBooks Online Accountant\u2014and clearly attendees couldn\u2019t wait to hear about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are their top tips for getting the most out of QuickBooks Online Accountant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Note: This session was tailored for Canadian QuickBooks Online Accountant users. Some features may not be available in other versions of QuickBooks Online Accountant.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Client Overview<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Client Overview<\/a> tab is an accountant-only view inside a client\u2019s QuickBooks Online file. It gives you a summary of the client\u2019s financial situation, including company setup, banking activity, common issues, and connected apps. For new clients, this convenient overview can give you better insight into the pricing you should charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said Davidson: \u201cThis is a really great tool if you have a meeting with a client and you\u2019re not sure if you\u2019re going to take them on, and they say, \u2018Yeah, our books are really clean!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shared Documents<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Davidson and Stewart love this feature, but a quick audience poll revealed that many attendees hadn\u2019t yet tried it. Within QuickBooks Online Accountant, you can request documents<\/a> (like bank statements or year-end materials) from your client through a secure portal. After your client uploads the files, you can easily view all of your shared documents in one tab. Hooray for no more back-and-forth emails!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Team Tab<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Team tab in QuickBooks Online Accountant is your one-stop shop for all things team-related. You can easily add or remove users<\/a>, as well as manage each user\u2019s access to your firm’s administration and books<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ProAdvisor Tab<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Not surprisingly, the ProAdvisor tab in QuickBooks Online Accountant contains a wealth of useful information. View your ProAdvisor tier and contact information for your Intuit consultant, download your certification badges, and access resources and training modules. You can also stay informed about upcoming product updates, which is key for keeping your clients in the loop \u2014 \u201cbecause some of them will go \u2018WHAT JUST HAPPENED?\u2019 otherwise,\u201d advised Davidson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work Tab<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Work<\/a> tab is QuickBooks Online Accountant\u2019s built-in practice management tool, allowing users to manage all of their tasks in one place. But when Stewart asked the audience if they were using it, responses were mixed. Several attendees said they had tried in the past but found it too frustrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luckily, the tool continues to evolve. Said Stewart: \u201cFor [Intuit\u2019s] Rich Preece, this is one of his babies and it has come leaps and bounds since he first introduced it a few years ago.\u201d Users now have new options for creating and managing workflow templates \u2014 so it may be time to give the Work tab another chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tax Returns Tab<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

After a year and a half in beta, the Tax Returns tab in QuickBooks Online Accountant is now live for general use. Said Stewart to the audience: \u201cWho prepares taxes? You need to get excited about this!\u201d This feature allows Canadian users to e-file T2\u2019s directly to the Canada Revenue Agency. Users can also sign up for a beta that will allow them to e-file T1\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apps Tab<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Davidson and Stewart are both huge fans of enhancing the QuickBooks Online experience through integrated apps<\/a>. \u201cWe have clients with very specific needs and QuickBooks Online isn\u2019t always a perfect fit \u2014 but chances are there is an app that will solve the problem,\u201d explained Davidson. Stewart added that she has 17 apps connected to QuickBooks Online Accountant: \u201cI might have a problem.\u201d Luckily, the Apps tab in QuickBooks Online Accountant allows users to easily find and manage apps for clients as well as their own firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accountant Tools<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Accountant Tools<\/a> drop-down menu gives QuickBooks Online Accountant users convenient access to a variety of tools and shortcuts. (\u201cThis is the fun part!\u201d said Stewart.) Some of Davidson and Stewart\u2019s favorites include Close Books (which is pretty self-explanatory), Reports Tools, and Workpapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Reports Tools, users can set a default date range<\/a> for all reports and tools, rather than having them open with the client\u2019s default settings. It was clear that this feature will be a game-changer for the audience; Stewart\u2019s demo was met with plenty of applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the\u00a0Workpapers<\/a>\u00a0feature speeds up the year-end adjustment process for Canadian QuickBooks Online Accountant users. Add notes and attachments for each client, make multiple adjustments in the books, and save all your work in the client file. Then, generate a tax return in just one click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
