{"id":16126,"date":"2023-03-07T12:08:30","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T17:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.method.me\/?p=16126"},"modified":"2026-01-13T10:01:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T15:01:27","slug":"international-womens-day-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.method.me\/blog\/international-womens-day-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating International Women\u2019s Day: What it means to us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On this International Women\u2019s Day (IWD), we recognize the progress that has been made to empower women in the tech industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the same vein, we know there is still a long way to go \u2014 after all, women make up only 26% of the STEM workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><cite><em>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/4467\/female-employees-at-tech-companies\/\">Statistia<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/06\/02\/female-ceos-fortune-500-2021-women-ceo-list-roz-brewer-walgreens-karen-lynch-cvs-thasunda-brown-duckett-tiaa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">, 2021.<\/a><\/em><\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the recent tech layoffs, it\u2019s estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90837794\/recent-tech-layoffs-affect-women-poc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">45%<\/a> of those impacted were women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, women make up over 10% of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. And although this is an improvement from the last few years, only 3% of these are women of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWomen CEOs run over 10% of the Fortune 500 companies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><em>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/01\/12\/fortune-500-companies-ceos-women-10-percent\/\">Fortune<\/a>, 2023.<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year&#8217;s IWD theme is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/theme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#EmbraceEquity<\/a>. It reminds us that we must continue pushing for greater equality and representation in the tech space and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we celebrate today and strive for a better tomorrow, let\u2019s remember to put equity at the forefront of our journey toward gender parity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-international-womens-day-means-to-methoders\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What International Women\u2019s Day means to Methoders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first International Women\u2019s Day happened in March 1911, when a million people rallied to support women\u2019s rights in Europe. The day gradually gained traction and became a global celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, IWD recognizes the social, economic, political, and cultural achievements of women while acknowledging that there\u2019s more progress to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what International Women\u2019s Day means to some of our very own:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-day-for-inclusivity\">A day for inclusivity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor me, International Women\u2019s Day is about celebrating the accomplishments of women across borders and industries. IWD is about an intersectional approach to inclusion and progress for womxn no matter their race, sexuality, or religion. It\u2019s a day that is especially important for those in STEM to recognize as, without gender equity, global innovation remains stagnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Eilis McCann, Manager of SEO and Content Marketing <br><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 360px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 360\/360;width: 300px;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.method.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2021-Eilis.png\" alt=\"Eilis\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\"><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recognizing-the-experiences-of-the-women-in-our-lives\">Recognizing the experiences of the women in our lives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A friend in university once told me that a guy in her high school computer science class once told her she\u2019d \u201cnever be a good developer.\u201d She took the comment in stride and used it to fuel her throughout her degree, not to prove to him that she could do it, but to prove to herself that comments like that wouldn\u2019t stop her from achieving anything she wanted to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to foster an environment where women aren\u2019t fueled by a need to prove anything but simply follow their passions. On this Women&#8217;s Day, I wish for us to continue striving for equality for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing up in South America, women often have their paths laid out for them from the time they\u2019re born. Many women there barely finish high school before getting married off to a suitor. I always questioned this custom until my hero, my aunt, showed me that it\u2019s okay for women to follow their own path.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, my aunt is the proud owner of her own business, and I work for a company where I feel respected by my peers. She earned her engineering degree from Polytechnique in Montreal, the school where 24 women were shot in 1989 simply because they were women studying engineering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IWD helps me remember those victims and their potential contributions to society that were lost. I acknowledge that if my mom had started\/finished her degree a few years later, she might have been one of those victims. I grew up hearing the stories of my grandmothers who never had an education because the day they married was the day their fate was sealed. I listened to their tales of interrupted dreams, of leaving their home country and working menial jobs to ensure their children would have a better shot at life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the work and legacy of the women who raised me that pushed me to accomplish everything they weren\u2019t allowed to. I am the first woman in my family to get a degree and&nbsp; work in STEM. It\u2019s a chance to reflect on the achievements of the women around you and re-evaluate how you support them daily \u2014 not just yearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This International Women&#8217;s Day, let&#8217;s commit ourselves to creating a more equitable world for everyone.
